online fora & other sites: where are you?
Feb. 25th, 2007 07:03 pmThese days the places I maintain an online profile that I check with any regularity are:
LJ - I'm more than a little obsessive here. The emotional voyeurism and exhibitionism is addicting. I read about half my friends religiously; the others I read most of the time, but am more likely to scan or miss a post. I check LJ daily, if not hourly.
Alt.Discordia - I'm trying to return, though it's hard to remember to check in often enough. I really need to set up tin somewhere, because I don't like having to use Google groups.
Flickr - as a film photographer, I don't post much there, but I do like to comment on other people's photos, have favorites, stuff like that. Without a specific set to look at that someone links me to, I check Flickr maybe once a month, but I usually find myself checking out friends pictures and links more like once every couple of weeks.
Del.icio.us - I don't really do anything social with this, but I've found it useful for replacing my bookmarks.
OkCupid - I've met some neat people through this thing. I check it maybe once every couple of weeks to see if someone has sent me a message. Every couple of months I'll browse through hot queer girls and send out a few messages and then check back, mostly only to find myself sad when they don't reply.
MySpace - I really fucking hate MySpace, but I signed up to keep in touch with some kids from the debate team and a few other people who don't have an online presence anywhere better. Can I say again how much I hate MySpace? I check this maybe once a month unless someone tells me to go look at stuff there. Befriend me on MySpace, but be warned that I will probably not see any invitations or messages here for at least two or three weeks. I'm going to try to check in more often, but a lot of times I forget about this place.
Tribe - if I didn't already have such a big involvement in LJ, Tribe would be my online home. There are some really awesome local people there that I don't know elsewhere online, and some of the Tribes are really interesting. Like with other sites, I've mostly checked in and then forgotten about it for a while and then returned and forgotten again. I'm going to try to check this on a weekly basis from now on, though, because there's some good discussion and community that's happening there.
Principia Discordia forums - I am strangely unimpressed. People seem nice, but I can't penetrate the barrier of in-jokes so I don't get half the conversation and any topic I start gets very few responses. It's kind of alienating. Nevertheless, this is one of the most active Discordian sites out there, so I still check in from time to time.
Barbelith - I just finally got an account here. I have been deeply impressed with the depth of discussion and breadth of knowledge and lack of bullshit here. People use long words and rhetoric! People are respectful of each other! I can't believe this is the internet! Still finding my level of involvement here.
Irreality - Yet again, something I just finally signed up on. I've of course been familiar with Irreality for a long time, but my head was elsewhere. I've just set up a profile in the last couple of days. If you're active there, send me a message and we can befriend each other (I'm saintmae). I haven't really explored yet, so I'm not sure how involved I'll get, but I'm very very interested in a number of the subjects that get discussed.
I don't really do mailing lists these days. I really really hate email, it manages to play right into everything that makes me procrastinate and then panic because I feel behind. I maintain a couple of mailing lists for Discordian.com, but those are really just basic announcements. I have two discussion lists for Discordian stuff, but again they are really low traffic.
What about you? Where do you maintain an online presence, and how often do you check in? Are there any sites you think are really awesome that I should check out?
